 In 1967 around the log driving days, they started the Allagash Canoe Trip. Avid canoeists would set their canoes in, paddle north, portage their gear two miles up to Mud Pond and then on to Chamberlain Lake. In 1971, the log driving days were over and the paper companies started opening roads so people could start at Chamberlain Lake. For the few adventurous ones...they still start here... 
Welcome to...Allagash Gateway Campsite Allagash Gateway Campsites are located on beautiful Ripogenus Lake. We offer housekeeping cabins and 50 primitive campsites, RV sites, hot showers, boat launch, marina, gasoline as well as canoe rentals and transportation services to the upper West Branch of the Penobscot River. Fish for land-locked salmon, trout and togue. Hunters Welcome! Float-Planes Welcome! Winter cabin rentals are by reservation only for snowmobilers and ice fishermen. We offer CANOE & KAYAK RENTAL AND TRANSPORTATION SERVICES TO THE UPPER WEST BRANCH OF THE PENOBSCOT RIVER
